THE PHIL SOUKUP WORK
A Tribute to an early Heddon Vamp Collector and his dedication to the hobby.

B efore anyone ever thought of publishing books about antique fishing lures or even knew about the internet or imagined lure web sites there were guys around the country who loved and collected old fishing tackle because of it's quality, beauty and history and began compiling information about the origins of their collections. One of these guys was Phil Soukup and these pages are a tribute to his work and dedication to the hobby of collecting Heddon Vamps.

Phil built a collection of several hundred Vamps and Vampires and didn't care if the lures were in pristine condition. He understood that they were made to be fished with and the fact that so many were in well used condition was evidence they were among the most successful lures ever produced.

Sadly, Phil is now suffering from severe Alzheimer's Disease and can no longer enjoy the hobby.

Phil compiled a note book about Vamp and Vampire lures using only the information from a few Heddon catalogs and his observations of the lures in his collections. His notebook is presented here in its original form. It is representative of the pioneering work of many early lure collectors who put together the basis of the wealth of information available to us collectors today.
While I don't agree with some of his conclusions, especially about using the pictures in the catalogs to date changes in the lures, I am never-the-less very grateful for his work and think it should be preserved and acknowledged.

Here's Phils notebook. The pages that follow are reproduced in picture, rather than text format, so they will take some time to load. I wanted to present the work in it's original form as much as possible.
